A motivating martial arts video

Hey guys!

Hope everyone is doing well! Wanted to share some Kung Fu motivation, as well as mention that I’m still enjoying taking Isshin-Ryu.

To date, I’ve learned the katas of Seisan, Seiunchin, Naihanchi, and Wansū, and I feel I’ve definitely improved my fighting skills. I’m also trying to work through healing a couple nagging injuries that keep me from pushing as hard as I’d like.

But I’m not going to say much more about my classes as I informed the instructors I would NOT write about the school, its instructors, or its students in any way unless I’m given permission or encouraged.

Finally, I wanted to share this pretty motivating video.

As my close friends know…. While I’m taking Ishinn-Ryu, I still love so many different styles. Especially, Kung Fu.

So enjoy the video and keep training hard!

More chi! Train harder!

Stan R. Mitchell

P.S. I end my posts with “More chi! Train harder!” in honor of Sifu Shi Yan Ming, who wrote The Shaolin Workout: 28 Days to Transforming Your Body and Soul the Warrior’s Way. It’s truly one of the best martial arts books ever written, in my opinion.

About meStan R. Mitchell writes some of the most action-packed, fast-moving gunfighter novels around. Tired of slow-paced, investigative novels that take 300 pages to excite you? Look no further! Stan is the best-selling author of 5 novels in 3 different time periods. He’s also a prior infantry Marine with Combat Action Ribbon, and a former journalist who spent ten years in the newspaper business, learning how to hook the reader, cut out the filler, and just tell the story. In short, Stan is knowledgeable, he’s fast, and his books will blow you away. Don’t forget to subscribe for email alerts.

Knocking the dust off, training in a formal dojo/school again

Hey guys!

Just wanted to let you know that I recently started training again at a formal dojo at the Roane School of Isshin-Ryu Karate. So far, I’m absolutely loving it and learning a lot.

The head teacher there is Grand Master True.

He’s a 9th degree black belt, who’s been involved in Isshin-Ryu for over 50 years.

He’s been teaching Isshin-Ryu since 1966 and runs the oldest Isshin-Ryu dojo in the state of Tennessee, which is pretty crazy to think about.

Best of all, Grand Master True True received his instruction directly from Grand Master Harold Long, one of the four founders of Isshin-Ryu in the United States. (This probably means nothing if you don’t know about the amazing history of Isshin-Ryu, but it means everything if you do.)

The school is pretty dang hardcore, and there’s probably not a thing I’d change about it. It’s definitely not a McDojo. There’s no AC in the building so in the summer, it’s blazing hot in there. In fact, even of late, I’ve been nearly dying in the heat. : )

And on the flip side, there’s no heat in the building, so I hear it gets so cold in the winter that you almost can’t stand to walk barefoot on the freezing tiles.

Anyway, I’m really hoping I can tough it out and stick around at the school. It’s truly an amazing environment to learn in.

Keep the faith,

Stan R. Mitchell

87 year old Shaolin Monk shows off incredible flexibility

This is an incredible display of flexibility and grace. This is just one reason to train in Shaolin Kung Fu. They put such an emphasis on stretching and building up your chi, or energy/spirit.

I’m embarrassed to admit that this guy is more flexible than me, though it’s something I continue to work on (and improve). Nonetheless, it’s inspiring to think you could have this level of movement and health at such an age.

Defending yourself against a knife attack

This is an excellent primer on knife defense. Loads of great stuff in here.

Trying to slow down in our modern society…

This is a great video to watch about the hectic-ness of our modern-day lives. I recommend watching it from the start to the four-minute mark.

The video partly discusses Qigong (pronouced as “chi-gong”), which is basically meditation you do while moving, stretching, and partially tensing your muscles.

Here’s a great example of it, and I can assure you it will help relieve your stress and strengthen your body.
